I’m not sure if it was the weather, my mood, or if I am (wahoo! high five!) just getting better at running, but today’s 5k (3 mile) run marked my first run where I thought, “Huh, maybe, just maybe, I will be able to run the Chicago marathon again this year.

It’s a glorious day in Melbourne, which made going for a run actually quite easy (I know, whoa), and once I was out on the paths I kinda, sorta, maybe fell into a zone. A ZONE PEOPLE. This rarely, if ever, happens to me. Usually each and every step is a struggle, but with a day like today I just wanted to go-go-go!

It was slow (cough because-I-took-so-many-photos cough) (cough and-because-I’m-a-slow-runner-cough), but I did it, and am better for it, and can now get on with my day.

Wanna know a secret? I’ve gone running the past two days. It wasn’t far (3k/1.8 miles each time), but still, I laced up my shoes, left my house, started jogging, and then didn’t stop.

And I ran not to lose weight, or for a race. Not to lose body fat, or to lose the jiggle on my thighs or bulge in my belly, but rather because I wanted to. (I know, whoa!)

Chicago marathon registration opens tomorrow (are you in?) and despite official training only starting in June, I got a little excited to see where my body will go this running season. Because right now? right now I’m at a beginner’s running fitness level (running is sooooo hard!!), but between now and October I’m going to train, and work hard, and improve. And I, for one, am excited!

That we manifest is before us.”

Why I think YOU should sign up for the Chicago Marathon. Yes, the FULL.

  • Because it’s something you never-ever-ever thought you could do.
  • Because it’s something you CAN do. I cross my heart and promise you that.
  • Because I also can’t even run one kilometre yet (and umm, oh hai there imperial peeps, that’s less than a mile I can’t run…YET)
  • Because it’ll be the best thing you’ll ever do. EVER.
  • Because it’s an experience of a lifetime.
  • And you’ll get a really nice bum from it.
  • Not to mention sexy legs & arms.
  • You’ll get to buy cute running outfits.
  • And become soooo healthy and strong on the inside.
  • And why Chicago? Because it’s 40,000 runners. 110,000 spectators. And a world major you don’t need to qualify for. (You’ll feel like a rock star running it!).
  • You’ll get a vacation from it and in the beautiful (beautiful!) Chicago too!!
  • AND A MEDAL!!
  • Because it’ll change your life forever and you’ll be a better person from it.
  • You’ll be proving to yourself you can do anything.
  • Because there is nothing better than setting a goal and following through with it.
  • How cool would it be to tell people you’ve run The Chicago Marathon? Huge bragging rights!
  • It’s an accomplishment no one can ever take away from you.
  • It’s the ultimate goal; a freaking marathon!!
  • Because having a goal race will keep you lacing up your shoes and running.
  • Two words: Carb loading.
  • Your self confidence will soar through the roof.
  • Because if Oprah can, you can!
  • Because you can raise money for an awesome cause! (I’ll be raising money for MS this year).
  • Because it’ll be hard, and annoying, and awful at times, but so, so, soooooo worth it.
  • Because having a goal like ‘a marathon,’ can pull you out of the deepest, darkest funk.
  • Because I (me, Liz!) will be doing it with you and posting a full training schedule online - so not to worry about that!
  • Because it’s on October 13, 2013 – far enough away for you to be at square one. (I swear, I’m at square one!).
  • Because you can put it on a resume - it’s that impressive!
  • Because you’ll make new friends from it & inspire others.
  • And because you can prove to yourself it’s mind over body. If you want to do it. Know that you can do it. And do it. Step out of your comfort zone, and get excited!
